SURA Allstars Go Into Bat To Give People With Disabilities A Sporting Chance

14/02/2018

SURA has gone into bat for people with disabilities by fielding a team of insurance industry cricket talent and acclaimed Sri Lankan women’s international cricket team vice-captain Sripali Weerakkody for a fundraising event, Marathon Cricket at the SCG.

Hosted by cricket community charity The Primary Club of Australia, the annual Marathon Cricket at the SCG event brings together teams from corporate Australia for cricket on the SCG to raise money for sporting and recreational facilities for people with disabilities.

Celebrating SURA’s continued commitment to diversity and inclusion, SURA’s team featured Sripali Weerakkody, a medium-paced bowler who has played in over 80 women’s One Day Internationals for Sri Lanka, along with representatives from many corners of the insurance industry, including underwriting agencies, insurers and brokers, and a media personality who was formerly a Wallabies centre and rugby league player.

SURA managing director Angie Zissis said Marathon Cricket at the SCG was a chance for representatives from corporate Australia, including the insurance industry, to help give a sporting chance to people living with a disability during the summer of cricket.

“The Primary Club of Australia does great things to support people with disabilities, and SURA is proud to be involved with an event that is both an enjoyable day out for the members of our industry team, and a great fundraising initiative that aims to assist disabled children in their sporting endeavours.”

SURA director and chief underwriting officer, Craig Patterson, who co-captained the team, said SURA had an ongoing association with The Primary Club of Australia and its commitment to supporting people with a disability as it aligned with SURA’s values.

“SURA has always seen the importance of playing a responsible role in the community, whether that’s among our insurance peers, or the wider community. This cricket community charity goes into bat for some very worthy and resilient people, and we’re proud to get behind them and help these individuals grow.”

SURA head of sales and marketing and co-captain Denver Van Gramberg said the insurance industry representatives in the SURA Allstars had enthusiastically embraced the chance to be a part of the charity day which in total raised around $100,000.
